a quicky

Just discovered that WordPress has an android app and wanted to check it out… even though I know how much I hate typing on my phone.
I wanted to share some thoughts on today’s sermon, but perhaps more poignant reflections belong to the computer. If anything, I’ll share a more superficial topic at striking my best thrift find of my
life.
The goodwill I frequent tends to have pretty good selection of trendy clothes and brand names reflecting the socioeconomic status of the area. Unfortunately they often overprice these items as well. On Friday, I was about done looking around when they wheeled out a new rack of clothes and I decided to take a look. I found this dress which happened to be a Diane von Furstenberg silk jersey dress, retails for $350…

… for $7.50. I couldn’t believe it, since I bought h&m cotton button-up for the same price last week. Even if I don’t keep it, on eBay dvf dresses go for around $100+. Seriously, unbelievable find since I never can find anything at thrift stores.
I also picked up this silk vintage skirt for $4.50, which fits me like a glove and looks so anthro.

I lucked out with two pure silk items I LOVE for $12! Starting to understand why people love thrift shopping! My parents are a little appalled though.

comma plates

Posted in room makeover, thrifting by jentsang on 08/02/2010

I haven’t been doing much shopping lately, but I stopped by a few thrift stores last week after my final and found these awesome, new-with-tags aqua comma dishes/plates from cb2 (the contemporary, “younger” version of crate & barrel).

They’re super tiny and not very practical as plates, but I couldn’t resist the shape and color. As a grammarphile, it’s natural that I love something designed after commas anyway.

After doing some research, I found that they’re normally $2 each, but I got them for way less than that… about 50 cents each.

I’m debating if I want to use them for tea parties or other get-togethers as appetizer dishes, but I realized they reminded me of raindrops as well. Despite the fact that my room is still painted a pale pink (thank you, 6-year-old me), I’m teasing the idea of using them on whatever wall space I can muster in my room as art, perhaps incorporated with an umbrella or a cloud. Considering how many blogs I peruse, I thought I could find some picture of an inspiration source, but to no avail.

Perhaps something to this effect, but obviously not a decal? Though I’m not exactly sure what I’d use for the cloud/umbrella.

What do you think? A little too crazy? Should I just use my plates as actual plates?

thrifting

I really dislike the use of the word “thrift” as a verb. But I don’t really know how else to explain rummaging through the local thrift stores. Most of you may know that since moving home, I’ve been in the process of (very, very) slowly deep-cleaning and rearranging my room/house to make it more suitable for the 22-year-old me rather than the 10-year-old me. So while I am a rummager, it doesn’t make sense that I go to local thrift store to drop off some donations, only to bring home some more stuff. But honestly, sometimes I can’t resist. Part of it is just curiosity if there’s a great deal or something adorable waiting in that store. Part of it’s just being an unintentional collector of sorts (*aka pack rat). Regardless, going to the thrift store usually means exercising some sort of restraint from buying stuff I really don’t need, but occasionally I run across something I love and would actually use.

Case in point: this week I stopped by one of the thrift stores I frequent.

I found this glass coaster that I absolutely love (black and white.. one of my favorites!).

I want to believe I still understand German, so guessing by the language it’s probably German.  (edit: I found out on wiki that Schwaben is a place in Germany. I was right!) I don’t know. It also came in a set, but I couldn’t justify using the other pieces, and I didn’t like them as much as this. Although I did feel bad about separating the set…

Also, it’s probably some souvenir, but I love it anyway.

Plus I love the watermark on the bottom. A cross AND a sailboat?! Color me SOLD.

Ok, enough about my rambling. I think what can be concluded from this post is that I like junk. Haha.
